Background
The Finance Graduate Training Scheme is a three‑year programme delivering six‑month rotations across key Finance teams. Graduates will gain hands‑on experience, progress towards the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification and develop a confident finance career.
Role Summary
The Finance department delivers a range of services across the University, supporting the Birmingham 2030 Strategic Framework. Key teams include Transaction Services, Procurement & Insurance, Financial Services, Internal Audit, Core Systems Optimisation and University Enterprise.
Main Duties
The trainee will undertake two six‑month placements each year. Placement opportunities include:
- Year one: Transaction Services (AR, AP, Reconciliations, Buying, Cash Management), Procurement (Tendering, Contracts, E‑Marketplace).
- Year two: Corporate Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation & Treasury Management.
- Year three: Business Partnering, Internal Audit, Finance Projects. Specialised placements are also available in Birmingham Enterprise, Core Systems Optimisation Team (CSOT) and Insurance.
Person Specification
We seek bright, inquisitive graduates passionate about finance and the University. Candidates should demonstrate:
- Demonstrable interest in a career in finance.
- Interest in working in a large, complex organisation and adaptability.
- Ability to manage work and study simultaneously.
- Analytical thinking and resilience.
- At least a 2.1 in an undergraduate degree within the past three years.
- GCSEs grade 4/C in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
- Initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility and self‑motivation.
- Effective communication, oral, presentational and written.
- Knowledge of Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics.
