The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK, is a world-leading department that combines innovative and translational research with evidence-based professional practice to promote lifelong engagement in physical activity, optimising health, wellbeing and performance for everyone. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Assistant Professor in Sports Physiology and Performance who will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration.
Research is likely to involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflecting in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation. We would welcome applications from individuals who can evidence involvement in sport physiology and performance research in collaboration with high performance sporting organisations. You will have a clear and coherent research vision aligned to enhancing athlete performance, recovery, or adaptation.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment, and enhancement of the student experience or employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including providing expert advice to staff and students, supervising and examining PhD students, and developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities within the university. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities.

Main Duties:
- Research: Planning and carrying out research, including planning and publishing high quality research, project managing research activities, presenting findings in publications and conference proceedings, effectively supervising and mentoring PhD students or early Career Researchers.
- Education: Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including teaching and examining courses at a range of levels, designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content.
- Management/Administration: Contributing to Departmental/School administration, leading and managing a team to devise and implement new processes, advising on personal development of colleagues and students.
Person Specification:
- A PhD relevant to the research/teaching area or equivalent qualifications.
- Extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
- Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/research.
- Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
- Experience of working/collaborating with sports organisations for support/research or education related activities.
