Lecturer (Teaching) in Politics in City of Westminster

To conduct and make an active contribution to the planning, development, delivery and coordination of learning and teaching at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels; and undertake administrative and management duties as required and supported by the School Director. The postholder will contribute to teaching and assessment in Politics, with a focus on governance or political economy (and related fields). Relevant expertise may include (but is not limited to) issues such as public and social policies, corruption, state capture and clientelism, but also energy politics, security, and the politics of technology.

This role meets the requirements for a Skilled Worker certificate of sponsorship or Global Talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa. The position will be available as a permanent role from 1 September 2026. Interviews are expected to take place on Friday 8 May.

Qualifications

A PhD in Politics or a related discipline by the start of the appointment is essential. The post-holder will be proficient in the use of social‑science research methods, with expertise in quantitative or mixed methods particularly welcomed. You will demonstrate regional expertise in one or more countries in the wider SSEES region (Central, Eastern, South‑Eastern Europe, Russia, the Baltics, the Caucasus, or Central Asia), with a particular preference given to candidates whose work focuses on Central Europe. Competence in at least one relevant language of the region, sufficient to support research and/or teaching, also needs to be demonstrated.

About the School

Founded in 1915, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) is one of the UK's largest institutions for research and teaching on Central, Eastern and South‑Eastern Europe, the Baltic region and Russia. Our mission is to create in‑depth knowledge of the SSEES region in comparative, transnational, and global contexts, and to promote and disseminate an understanding of our region to the wider world; to develop multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and multi‑method approaches to knowledge creation and to teaching; and to enhance the development of area studies at UCL and among the wider academic community.
