What You’ll Do

Your impact: Crane Beach remains a national model for balancing conservation of diverse natural habitats and wildlife with active public recreation. More than 1,200 acres of beachfront, dunes, and maritime forest grace the property. Seasonal team members help create a safe, mission-driven and memorable experience for Crane Estate visitors.

The Role: As a Special Police Officer, you will help ensure a positive visitor experience by promoting public safety, protecting natural resources, assisting and educating visitors, and monitoring and enforcing state, local and organizational rules. Specials promote the organization and staff with knowledge of The Trustees, the Crane property and its features. They may assist with special events and occasionally staff entrance stations and parking lots, performing related duties.

Specifically, you’ll:

  • Ensure effective communication and enforcement of Crane regulations and policies as well as state and local laws, as established by the Chief of the Ipswich Police, the Property Business Manager, and the Crane Beach Public Safety Manager. This includes the right to use police powers as determined by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Provide security services (routine and event-specific) for Crane Beach, its entry gate and parking lot, and the Crane Estate; establish a security presence through regular patrols.
  • Uphold standards for diligent record keeping and incident reporting.
  • Ensure proper operation and care of all assigned equipment including trucks, ATVs, and portable radios.

This is a limited-term position, 8-32 hours/week, reporting directly to the Crane Beach Public Safety Manager.

What You’ll Need

Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • Must currently be active in, fully qualified for, or recently retired from a law enforcement career.
  • Upon hiring, participation and successful completion of all MPTC continuing education courses and other training and upkeep determined by IPD guidelines is mandatory.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with record/log keeping and public safety documentation.
  • Good-natured, motivating team player, with strong communication skills and work ethic.
  • Radio communication experience.
  • Exceptionally strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly.
  • Comfortable on their feet for extended periods walking on challenging terrain, including the ability to hike the trail system and sandy beach.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and reliability.
  • Ability to thrive in both team and independent work environments.
  • Ability to fill evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Maintain standards as specified by the Ipswich Police Chief, including Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council certification and ongoing in-service training, First Responder certification, CPR certification, and defibrillator certification (renewals as specified).

Preferred:

  • Additional experience/background in public safety, recreation, or natural resource management is a plus.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be active in, fully qualified for, or recently retired from a law enforcement career.
  • Must pass screening and swearing-in procedures of the Ipswich Police Department.
  • Must be available to work evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.
  • A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy.
