The Tredegar Practice is a friendly, forward-thinking GP surgery serving approximately 6000 patients. Our multidisciplinary team includes GPs, nurses, HCAs, clinical pharmacists and administrative staff, all working together to provide high quality, patient-centred care.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Healthcare Assistant to join our clinical team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of safe, effective care to our patients and help us manage increasing workload in a structured, sustainable way.

Main duties of the job:

  • Undertaking clinical observations (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturations)
  • Perform phlebotomy (valid phlebotomy training certificate required) and other routine clinical tasks, where trained and competent.
  • ECG recording
  • Urinalysis and specimen handling
  • NHS Health Checks and other basic health screening
  • Simple wound care and dressings (if trained)
  • Supporting chronic disease reviews under the direction of a practice nurse or GP
  • Recording information accurately in the clinical system (e.g. EMIS)
  • Providing basic lifestyle advice (e.g. smoking cessation, weight, exercise) within agreed protocols

About you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience as an HCA (ideally in primary care, but other settings considered)
  • Holds, or is working towards, a recognised Care Certificate or equivalent
  • Is organised, reliable and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Has good communication skills and a caring, professional manner
  • Is comfortable using IT systems and following clinical protocols
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality and safeguarding

Job responsibilities:

To support the GP and nursing team in the delivery of safe, effective, high quality patient care in the surgery and, where appropriate, in the community. The postholder will undertake delegated clinical and administrative tasks within their level of competence, following practice protocols, to help manage practice workload efficiently.

Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Healthcare Assistant / Healthcare Support Worker (primary care or other NHS setting)
  • Basic clinical skills appropriate to the role
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and follow instructions & protocols
  • Basic IT skills and ability to use clinical systems after training
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection
  • Experience in General Practice
  • Care Certificate or equivalent qualification
  • Experience with EMIS
  • Experience of NHS Health Checks, ECGs, wound care
