Supervisors within the integrated Environmental Operations, Housing, Climate & Economy Directorate, will support the Assistant Service Managers and oversee frontline Environmental Operations activities in the London Borough of Hackney. The role covers all cleansing, waste & recycling collections and related services.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage a team of 25–30 frontline operational staff and contribute to supervision of a 150+‑person workforce across your section.
  • Oversee street cleaning, refuse & recycling collection, commercial waste, markets and other Environmental Operations activities.
  • Conduct inductions, training, allocation of work tasks and monitoring of time‑keeping and performance to meet safety and service standards.
  • Manage staff and vehicle allocation; handle sickness, performance, disciplinary and leave matters.
  • Ensure all services comply with contract schedules and address any non‑compliance promptly.
  • Carry out health and safety assessments and implement remedial action or safeguards.
  • Perform low‑level enforcement work for domestic and commercial waste, including issuing warning letters and fixed penalty notices when required.
  • Support and deputise for the Assistant Service Managers in their day‑to‑day management of Environmental Operations.

Working Conditions

Flexible and dedicated supervisory approach covering a 24‑hour cycle. Work weekends and bank holidays with catch‑up and support across day, evening, and night shifts.

What You Will Bring

  • Proven experience delivering Environmental Operations services (Refuse, Recycling, Markets, Street & Estate Cleansing Services).
  • Ability to organise staff, prioritise work and adapt in challenging situations.
  • Strong motivational skills to engage an operational workforce and communicate service objectives and standards.
  • Methodical approach to service delivery, accurately completing paperwork such as attendance records and timesheets.
  • Candid confidence to address underperformance and raise issues directly with staff.
