We’re looking for an enthusiastic Analytics Engineer with experience working on a modern data stack such as dbt, Google Cloud Platform, Fivetran, Airflow, and Tableau. The role focuses on creating reliable, governed datasets that empower data‑driven decisions across the Guardian. The Analytics Engineer will partner with cross‑functional teams including Marketing, Advertising, Editorial, and Finance to deliver high‑quality data products swiftly. This requires designing, building and maintaining efficient ELT pipelines, ensuring data quality, and documenting data lineage and governance.
About the Role
- Data Modelling and Transformation: Design and implement conceptual, logical, and physical data models, using SQL and dbt to build cost‑efficient and maintainable ELT pipelines scheduled with Apache Airflow.
- Data Quality Assurance: Implement and monitor testing metrics (completeness, accuracy, validity, timeliness) and collaborate with data owners/stewards to quickly identify and resolve quality incidents.
- Requirements Gathering and Delivery: Work closely with data users to determine functional and non‑functional requirements and deliver new and existing data products within an agile framework.
- Documentation and Governance: Collaborate with Data Governance, Analysts, and Software Engineers to ensure comprehensive documentation of source data, business logic, transformation lineage, and metadata.
- Compliance: Model data strictly according to policies for data privacy, protection, security, and broader governance and regulatory frameworks.
About You
- Experience designing and building optimised data models using established methodologies (e.g. Kimball) in a consumer‑orientated organisation.
- Skilled in business analysis and requirement gathering, translating business objectives into effective model designs.
- Proficient in writing complex, analytical SQL for ELT pipelines, with a strong understanding of performance implications, modularisation, and idempotence.
- Proven experience with the modern data stack (e.g., BigQuery, Airflow, DBT, Fivetran, Tableau, Git).
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex or technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders, including non‑technical colleagues.
