Transport correspondent

The Times is seeking a transport correspondent to cover one of the most important beats in journalism.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding reporter with a track record of exclusives, a forensic eye for weighty Whitehall documents and an insatiable interest in a subject that affects the lives of everyone.

You must be ready to spot stories, understand human interest and cultivate contacts, from government ministers to lobbyists and protest groups.

Responsibilities

  • Bring in regular exclusives and maintain excellent contacts in the transport field
  • Write stories in a distinctive and engaging way that meets the brief from the commissioning editor and to the required length
  • Command respect and authority on the subject of transport and communicate that knowledge effectively in print, digital, radio and television as a representative of The Times
  • Be a self-starter and pitch strong ideas for all sections across print and digital
  • Able to write across all sections and platforms seamlessly with particular attention to digital
  • Have a strong knowledge of social media and an ability to use it to increase our readership
  • Regularly pitch and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth
  • Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing on elements that enhance the stories you write

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a writer for a national newspaper or magazine
  • Demonstrable passion and interest in transport.
  • Strong contacts within the sector and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories
  • Experience in digital and a commitment to growing our digital audience
  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Experience working collaboratively
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
