The English Department Leader will provide strategic and operational leadership for English across the school, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning from early years to the end of secondary education. This on-site role, based in Up Holland, involves planning and overseeing the English curriculum, monitoring standards, and supporting colleagues with effective pedagogy, assessment, and intervention. The role holder will model excellent classroom practice, teach English classes, lead departmental meetings, and use data to raise attainment and progress for all pupils.
Responsibilities include mentoring and coaching staff, organizing literacy initiatives, working closely with senior leaders and other subject leads, and engaging with families and the wider community to promote a culture of reading and writing. This is a full-time position requiring active presence in school during teaching hours, meetings, and related events.
Qualifications
- Proven expertise in English teaching, including strong subject knowledge in language, literature, and literacy development across primary and/or secondary phases.
- Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating an engaging English curriculum aligned with national standards and school priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team, including mentoring, coaching, and supporting colleagues to improve practice.
- Strong skills in assessment, data analysis, and use of evidence to inform teaching, interventions, and departmental planning.
- Excellent classroom management, lesson planning, and differentiation skills to meet the needs of diverse learners, including pupils with SEND and high prior attainment.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with staff, families, external partners, and trust leadership.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent, with substantial experience teaching English in primary and/or secondary settings.
- Proven commitment to safeguarding, child protection, and promoting the welfare and inclusion of all pupils.
- Willingness to engage in ongoing professional learning and contribute to trust-wide initiatives and cross-school projects.
- Experience in a departmental or middle leadership role is highly desirable, as is familiarity with UK inspection and accountability frameworks.
