Experienced and commercially astute Head of Litigation sought for a permanent role at a Bromley based law firm with links to the insurance industry specialising in dealing with matters arising from RTA claims. This is a full-time role with the opportunity for hybrid working following a settling in period as well as training and support to provide career progression.
Role involves:
- Head up the Litigation Department
- Manage departmental performance, identifying risks and escalating issues to the Directors
- Drive a high-performance culture focused on results, accountability, and quality
- Drive continuous improvement in processes, systems, and legal delivery
- Lead development of litigation processes to ensure files are compliant, efficient, and profitable
- Contribute to senior leadership decisions and business planning
Litigation & Case Management
- Run a mixed caseload of high-value litigated matters (£25,000 - £100,000+)
- Manage complex and multi track claims from inception through to trial and settlement
- Carry out risk assessments & due diligence on new and existing cases
- Draft and issue court proceedings and prepare detailed witness statements
- Ensure full compliance with court directions and deadlines
- Instruct Counsel and manage hearing preparation
- Allocate settlement funds and oversee file closure processes
- Ensure all litigation activity complies with relevant protocols, CPR, and regulatory requirements
- Work task lists effectively to ensure timely progression of cases
- Process general incoming post/emails within 5 working days
- Liaise with clients regularly to obtain instructions, provide advice, and deliver updates
- Prioritise urgent correspondence (including offers) within 2 working days and respond to call-backs within 2 working days
- Conduct conference calls with work providers where appropriate
Team Management
- Manage, mentor and develop solicitors, fee earners and support staff
- Conduct probation reviews, performance reviews, training, and ongoing development
- Handle disciplinary matters where required
- Support recruitment, onboarding and training of new team members
- Undertake file reviews and provide supervision across the team
- Sign off on court documents and key stages of litigation
- Conduct one-to-one meetings with fee earners, providing technical guidance on complex matters
- Carry out internal audits to ensure SLA compliance and effective case management
- Foster a high-performance, accountable, and collaborative team culture
- Keep up to date with legislative changes and CPR updates, sharing knowledge / Newsletters across the team and to senior management
- Promote continuous professional development across the department
- Monitor billing and recovery rates, reporting to Directors on financial performance and opportunities for improvement
Operational Responsibilities
- Open/close the office where necessary
- Undertake training and development relevant to the role
- Carry out ad hoc duties as reasonably required by the Directors
Required experience/qualifications
- Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) with a current practising certificate
- Extensive experience in credit hire litigation and debt recovery
- Proven experience heading up or managing a litigation department
- Strong working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR)
- Demonstrable experience handling fast track and multi-track cases
- Strong commercial awareness and financial management experience
- Experience dealing with insurer clients and panel work desirable but not essential
- Familiarity with case management systems and legal tech solutions desirable but not essential
