A senior role within the News publishing team focused on Comment, with responsibility for devising and executing publishing and promotion plans, sub-editing, building and revising articles, and ensuring the highest quality and presentation. Senior Publishers work closely with commissioners, visual teams and other publishers to develop articles. They will be involved in early commissioning discussions, and are expected to feed into ideas at the point of conception. On Comment, there is scope for creativity and independence in the Senior Publisher role. Working alongside the Lead Publisher, they will be responsible for publishing Comment content in a timely way to the highest possible standards, ranging from snap responses to long-form articles. They will be expected to act up to cover Comment Lead Publisher on the rota, and to cover other senior News publishing roles if required.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Lead Publisher in challenging and collaborating with commissioners, helping craft headlines, edit copy and schedule Comment articles.
  • Sub and build articles, especially Top Stories, under direction of the Lead Publisher and Head of Publishing.
  • Ensure articles are clear and well-written, and have the right headlines and visual assets.
  • Publish snap comment pieces quickly and accurately.
  • Revise the copy, headlines and "build" of articles to verify the content is accurate and in accordance with house style, and that the files are optimised for our digital audiences.
  • Contribute to publishing plans for special projects and events alongside commissioners and LP. The SP may be expected to take personal ownership of the publishing of a special project, from planning to subbing and building.
  • Plan ahead to make sure publishing benchmarks are met and chase commissioners for copy.
  • Analyse audience data to learn what works for the Telegraph's readers and use this to inform publishing.
  • Liaise with Homepage & App and our Audience teams (Social, Newsletters, SEO, Community etc.) to plan and enhance our content across different platforms.
  • Commission and/or create creative visuals, gifs, carousels, graphics.
  • Work closely with news bloggers to feed in Comment posts.

Significant experience of writing and sub-editing stories on digital platforms in News and Comment is required. Strong editorial judgement, and the ability to distinguish quickly between good and bad ideas and pitches is essential. A high level of knowledge and interest in UK politics and current affairs is necessary. An excellent writer with the ability to edit and improve copy quickly is important. Quick, accurate subbing and ability to write sharp, digital-friendly headlines are crucial. Digital publishing skills including knowledge of visual storytelling and a brilliant eye for video and pictures, as well as creative flair for info boxes, polls, graphics etc. are also required. Enthusiasm and imagination for presenting stories digitally, along with the ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines, is vital. Understanding of social media and SEO, as well as familiarity with using content management systems for digital publishing, is expected.
