Join to apply for the Weekend Sports News Editor role at The Telegraph. A key member of the Sports editing team, working on commissioning, breaking and prosecuting both news stories and live coverage. The role is digital first, with a real emphasis on bringing our coverage of live sport to life. You will also be asked to react to breaking news and live events, as well as develop stories to serve our subscription‐first audience. The primary responsibility is working on Saturdays and Sundays – where our live need is greatest. However, around once a month we will look to have you work on a Friday and/or Monday instead, to understand more about what we do away from the weekend and how we serve our subscribers. (For clarity: this is a two day per week / 0.4 FTE position.)

Key responsibilities

  • Commissioning and editing news stories for our digital subscribers
  • Working with the editor of the day to bring live sport to life through sharp commissioning and use of visuals, graphics and video
  • Build a relationship with reporters to help prosecute news stories and live events
  • Over time, become ready to drive the department on a weekend morning or take charge of a night news shift
  • Helping to drive subscriptions and engagement via the Telegraph website and app

Experience

  • Experience of news editing and commissioning, not necessarily on a sport desk
  • Experience of regular and fast‐paced communication with reporters
  • Strong news judgement and clear thoughts of how best to bring live sport to life in our coverage
  • Able to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines
  • Broad knowledge of a wide variety of men's and women's sport, particularly football, rugby and cricket
  • Understanding of social media and data
  • Knowledge and understanding of The Telegraph's subscription strategy
