As Deputy Features Picture Editor, you will be instrumental in the daily creation and commissioning of dynamic visual content for the Telegraph. This includes features, lifestyle, and culture sections (encompassing health, gardening, motoring, interiors, and travel). This rewarding position demands enthusiasm and dedication to meeting production deadlines.

The right candidate will have an excellent eye for winning imagery, good instincts and a strong understanding of how to construct visual packages. You will be responsible for helping build the visual identity of the Telegraph\’s features and lifestyle content, so a creative approach, organised and strong commissioning skills will be essential. The role will be based in our Victoria newsroom five days per week.

Key responsibilities

  • Bring our features and lifestyle content to life through the creative use of photography, video and illustrations
  • Curate visual content across our publishing platforms, ensuring alignment with editorial objectives and standards
  • Provide cover as the department Picture Editor in their absence, assist in the day to day running of the Features and Lifestyle picture desk team
  • Captioning images concisely and correctly, ensuring factual information is correct and recorded accurately.
  • Commission photography, video shoot in the UK and internationally often at short notice
  • Proactively research images from a variety of sources
  • Liaising with Editors, Publishers and designers to provide the best imagery within budgets
  • Generate story ideas using content from a number of sources, such as social media
  • Extensive experience of photo editing, commissioning, at a national news or similar organisation
  • Good eye for composition – from building photo galleries to selecting cover imagery
  • Strong interest in photography, current affairs, arts and lifestyle and able to think creatively
  • Experience of content management systems
  • Comfortable working as part of a team but able to work independently and use initiative
  • Able to work quickly, accurately, to tight deadlines and under pressure. On a variety of projects all at the same time
  • Able to work to budget and maximise the usage of imagery from a wide variety of sources
  • Strong editing and confident curation skills
  • Have experience of using Content Hub for Publishers image database. Be able to demonstrate an understanding of photo licensing contracts and operating within IPSO guidelines
