About The Role

A lead digital publishing role responsible for running day-to-day publishing activity, managing publishing plans, upholding quality and executing the vision of the Head of Business and Head of Business Publishing.

The Lead Publisher will collaborate with and challenge commissioners on news stories and features, ensuring articles have a clear audience and purpose, and that they are published with sharp headlines and at the right time to maximise traffic and engage both subscribers and new readers.

The role is also crucial in making sure the high quality of Telegraph Business articles is maintained, directing sub-editors, revising, and feeding back to commissioners and writers when improvements are required. The Lead Publisher will also work closely with visual editors to make sure articles are enhanced with informative graphics and strong imagery.

Working across a fast-paced newsroom, the Lead Publisher must balance the needs of a variety of content types. They must consider the promotional opportunities for Business articles both on and off-platform, and make sure content is optimised for the appropriate platform.

The role reports to the Head of Business Publishing and will line manage two Business Publishers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Business Publishing and senior commissioning editors to develop digital publishing plans that reach and engage audiences.
  • Alongside the HoP, lead the publishing team to ensure that Business content is produced to the highest standard and at optimal times across our digital products and platforms.
  • Responsible for the subbing and building of top story articles or the appropriate delegation of this responsibility.
  • Analyse performance data to understand the Telegraph’s audience – and using the data, learn from what publishing and promotion techniques worked well and why, feeding back to commissioners.
  • Collaborate with and challenge commissioners to ensure articles have a clear audience and purpose, present creative ideas on how to enhance our journalism for digital platforms.
  • Coordinate a publishing schedule that works best for engaging existing and new subscribers and ensuring an even delivery of content.
  • Plan the digital content package around key stories and major events, liaising with key desks across the newsroom.
  • Oversee digital publishers to ensure articles are presented creatively across all platforms with intelligent copy and compelling headlines, standfirsts and visuals.
  • Work closely with visual editors, commission assets and graphics and direct publishers in making creative use of video and pictures.
  • Work with the Homepage & app, Social, SEO and Community teams to ensure articles are promoted to the right audiences and in the right way so that they achieve their full potential.
  • Support the development of individuals in the publishing team and act as a mentor to more junior colleagues.

Key Skills

  • Experience of managing a team in a busy newsroom.
  • Excellent news sense to be able to cast a critical eye over articles to ensure they are written and presented in the best fashion.
  • Clear understanding of who the Telegraph audience is and what makes them engage with a story.
  • A broad awareness of Telegraph Business content and ability to generate new ideas to identify and break into new audiences
  • Understanding of data analytics and how it can be used to aid commissioning.
  • Understanding of how best to present articles across digital products and platforms.
  • Significant experience of editing and publishing on digital platforms in Business journalism.
  • Quick, accurate writing of headlines.
  • Knowledge of visual storytelling and a brilliant eye for photography as well as creative flair for info boxes, polls, graphics, etc.
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
