We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in south Birmingham. This role involves supporting pupils with a range of SEMH needs, including Autism, by providing targeted support and personalised assistance to help them access learning. You will work closely with pupils on a one-to-one or small group basis, helping to build strong, trusting relationships and supporting both their academic progress and emotional wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Implement individual learning plans and behaviour support strategies
  • Help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation and social development
  • Assist with monitoring pupil progress and reporting observations
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals

Person Specification

  • Essential: Experience working with children or young people with SEND/SEMH needs
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • A calm, patient, and flexible approach
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice
  • Desirable: Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant)
  • Training in behaviour management or SEMH strategies
