Job overview
This is an entry level role into data reporting and planning and may suit a recent graduate in Informatics or Computer Science/Data Analytics.
Our Directorate of Education and Training has ambitious goals for increasing student numbers, diversifying its portfolio and extending its reach. A vacancy has arisen for a Returns, Planning & Insight Officer, part of a newly created Returns, Planning & Insight team within the Academic Registry department, to support the Directorate in delivering insight in our education and training activities, and to lead for the Directorate and Trust in preparing statutory student returns via our validating partner institution.
The successful applicant will bring technical knowledge of databases, other data systems and business analytics platforms. They will be able to use knowledge of data query skills to provide data quality exception reporting and help colleagues in the Directorate to improve data quality.
They will provide expert input to preparations for data collections and use project management skills in the preparation of data returns in accordance with changing statutory reporting requirements and support the design and develop Power BI dashboards to support strategic and management decision-making, with emphasis on insights from data about applicants and students.
Main duties of the job
- Assist with the delivery of regulatory reporting to our University Partners/ Office for Students (OfS), such as HESA and HESES, providing support in data queries, data cleansing and data production.
- Work with senior colleagues to understand and address key aspects of institutional performance, for example widening access, equalities, student attendance and retention.
- To assist with producing data for reporting dashboards to our Commissioners, NHS England (NHSE) and to Internal Boards within the Trust.
- To assist with the management and development of a suite of validation and exception reports, using SQL and Power BI, which will ensure that data quality is optimal at key points during the academic year.

Person specification
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent experience, ideally in a numerate subject.
- Additional specialist knowledge acquired through training and relevant experience equating to post graduate level.
- Experience acquired through degree or equivalent plus additional specialist knowledge acquired through training and relevant experience to Master’s degree level or equivalent.
Experience
- Experience of and demonstrable competence in data querying.
- Experience of databases.
- Experience of student records and databases, preferably including SITS.
- Experience of working in a relevant role at a UK Higher Education institution.
