The Tank Museum Workshop is responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of the Running Collection of vehicles within the Museum’s collection. The Workshop has two main deliverables: maintenance support and vehicle operations. The Workshop Manager is responsible for the planning and delivery of maintenance support activities; the Vehicle Operations Manager is responsible for planning and delivery of operational support. Their combined outputs provide a fleet of vehicles and trained operators to enable the safe delivery of the scheduled vehicle displays and events throughout the year.

The Vehicle Operations Assistant will report to the Vehicle Operations Manager to support in the planning and delivery of vehicle operations for events and displays, including the training of The Tank Museum staff and volunteers supporting the vehicle elements of these activities. This is a hands-on role requiring the generation of documents, records and delivery of vehicle-based training, to ensure that The Tank Museum remains a centre of excellence in the safe operation and display of historic armoured vehicles. The role has a strong focus on training and health & safety.

In addition to these core responsibilities, the Vehicle Operations Assistant may be expected to assist with other projects within the workshop and wider Museum.

Key Accountabilities
  • Vehicle Operations: Ensuring the safe operation and movement of vehicles within the Tank Museum, on and off-site, by suitably qualified personnel.
  • Vehicle Operations: Timely and accurate maintenance of the Vehicle Database and reporting of defects and issues.
  • Vehicle Operations: Assistance in planning internal and external vehicle moves.
  • Volunteer Management: Liaison with Workshop Volunteers to determine availability to support museum events. Assessing volunteer competency to meet operational standards. Assist in planning and delivery of volunteer training weekends.
  • Training: Planning and delivery of training for the safe operation of vehicles and equipment, to include marshalling, driving, commanding and safe supervision of guests to workshop technicians and volunteers. Documenting, recording and maintaining all internal and external training activities.
  • Events: Assist the Vehicle Operations Manager in delivering Tank Museum events such as Tankfest, Tiger Day and Tanks in Action. Organising and assisting with vehicle rides. Supervising staff and volunteers from other departments when assisting the workshop team during events.
  • Health And Safety: Ensuring the workshop standard operating procedures are followed. Ensuring accurate and timely Accident, Incident and Near Miss reporting.
What You’ll Bring
  • NVQ level 3 in engineering or equivalent is desirable, along with forklift, LGV and tracked vehicle licence.
  • Health & Safety qualification relevant to a workshop operation is preferable, however you must have demonstrable experience of managing H&S issues within a workshop.
  • Experience in organising and delivering training, along with maintaining training records is essential.
  • Experience of supervising a team and working with volunteers.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Knowledge of the heritage and museum sector, along with working on the maintenance of historic vehicles is desirable.
