The Tank Museum’s Visitor Experience Department plays a pivotal role in ensuring every visitor has a memorable and enriching experience. Comprising teams such as Facilities, Education and Events, our team is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable visit for all. Situated at Dorset's largest indoor tourist attraction, we cater to diverse audiences, from military history enthusiasts to families seeking entertainment and education. Whether it’s facilitating engaging tours, organising events, or overseeing the smooth operation of our facilities, our Visitor Experience Department strives to create a welcoming environment while imparting knowledge and fostering appreciation for the history of tanks and the crews who served in them.

The Tank Museum’s education programme is central to the charity’s success in inspiring the next generation to engage in both history and STEM. The Education Officer supports the planning and delivery of the formal and informal learning programme whilst working with other departments such as Events and Exhibitions to develop family-based learning activities across special events, school holidays and exhibition development.

Overall Role Purpose

Responsible for the delivery of formal and informal learning activities including public tour program, schools’ education program and family activities. To also actively support the day-to-day operation of the Tank Museum.

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the Education & Experience Manager with all administration including staffing for the full team including general museum days, school groups and event days.
  • Deputising for the Education & Experience Manager, leading the team on their behalf when not on shift.
  • Deputising for the Senior Education Officer, leading school groups on their behalf a minimum of twice a week and when they are not on shift.
  • To support the Education Manager and Senior Education Officer in the development and implementation of the Educators onboarding and training programme, ensuring all talks and tours are delivered to the highest of standards - including educational workshops.
  • Co-ordinate all aspects of school booking administration including managing the education diary and liaising with teachers and external education bodies to ensure the smooth running of all visits.
  • Assisting the Education Manager and Senior Education Officer in the development of creative programming including school holidays and STEM focused activities.
  • Supporting the Senior Education Officer with set up for workshops and caring for the formal and informal Education Handling Collection.
  • To fulfil the usual roles of an Educator when not fulfilling the above duties.
  • To be a welcoming and knowledgeable pro-active first point of contact with our visitors, assisting them with any enquiries they may have.
  • Ability to deliver tours and workshops to a wide variety of customers at the Museum ranging from schools and MOD Groups to VIPs and corporate hires.
  • To ensure the security, functionality & cleanliness of the collection / exhibits on display by regular inspections – reporting as required.
  • To actively promote the Museum’s services, facilities and products.
  • To act as a first aider on behalf of the Museum.
  • Open and close the Museum exhibition halls at the start and end of each day when required, ensuring the galleries are safe and ready to welcome visitors.
  • To act as a fire marshal and have knowledge of fire evacuation procedures.
  • To know how to use the Tank Museum’s I.T systems.
  • To assist with Tank Museum special events, visits and functions.

Essential What you’ll bring:

  • Excellent standard of education including strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience of working in a heritage organisation / school or customer service environment.
  • Ability to work alongside and supervise team members and volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or work independently.
  • Strong sense of timekeeping.
  • IT literate (Microsoft Office).
  • To work and lead the team one weekend per month.
  • To work flexibly (special events & unsociable hours) at the discretion of The Tank Museum.

Desirable

  • First Aid qualification, with some safeguarding knowledge and/or qualification.
  • Experience of working with Primary & Secondary school aged children.
  • Knowledge of 20th century military vehicles.
