We’re hiring for the position of Retail Assistant across the retail departments at The British Museum.
If you’re looking for a new challenge and you’re able to commit to full time hours, following a rolling rota (4 on and 2 off), this role is for you.
Your New Role
- Assisting/serving customers inside the shops with their purchases
- General cleaning duties in the shop
- Taking cash and card payments on an EPOS till system
- Restocking the displays
- Providing information about the exhibitions and the Museum
Your Talents
- DBS Holder (paper certificate no older than 5 years)
- Good with numbers
- Works well as a team
- Hard-working
- Able to work under pressure
- Previous retail experience is crucial

This is full-time work in one of the world’s most visited museums, on a rolling rota of four days on and two off. You will also have one full weekend off each month, which gives you a steady rhythm to plan your life around. Extended evening opening for a major exhibition runs until July 2027, so the shops will be busy, visible and lively well into the evening. You will build practical retail skills in that setting, from EPOS and merchandising to talking visitors through what they have just seen. Few retail CVs carry that kind of setting. For someone who wants retail with a real sense of occasion, it is a strong place to build experience.
