We are seeking a highly organised and motivated GP Practice Manager to oversee the day-to-day operational running of our busy and patient-focused practice. This is a key leadership role, ensuring the smooth delivery of services, regulatory compliance, and high standards of patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and manage all aspects of practice operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness across administrative and clinical support functions.
  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant healthcare regulations, policies, and governance frameworks.
  • Oversee contract adherence, including NHS contractual obligations and service delivery requirements.
  • Manage and support practice staff, including recruitment, performance management, and training.
  • Handle patient complaints and feedback, ensuring timely resolution and continuous service improvement.
  • Develop and implement practice policies and procedures.
  • Manage budgets, financial performance, and resource allocation in collaboration with partners.
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting systems.
  • Support strategic planning and service development initiatives.

Job responsibilities

Role Summary

The Practice Manager is responsible for the overall operational leadership and management of the practice, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality services to patients. The postholder will oversee all aspects of business performance, regulatory compliance, staff management, and financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Management
    • Oversee the day-to-day running of the practice, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor practice policies and procedures.
    • Ensure effective use of systems, resources, and workforce planning.
    • Lead on service improvement and practice development initiatives.
  • Contracts & Network Working
    • Manage and monitor all contracts, including NHS and enhanced services.
    • Ensure full adherence to contractual requirements and performance targets.
    • Act as the main point of contact for Primary Care Network (PCN) engagement and collaborative working.
    • Support the practice in meeting network objectives and participating in shared services.
  • Compliance & CQC Regulations
    • Ensure the practice remains fully compliant with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and other regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain up-to-date policies, risk assessments, and governance frameworks.
    • Lead on inspections, audits, and quality assurance processes.
    • Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Finance & Business Management
    • Oversee practice finances, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
    • Monitor income and expenditure to ensure financial sustainability.
    • Manage payroll, supplier contracts, and procurement processes.
    • Identify opportunities for cost efficiency and income generation.
  • Human Resources
    • Lead on recruitment, retention, and performance management of staff.
    • Support staff development, training, and appraisal processes.
    • Ensure compliance with employment law and HR best practice.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.
    • Oversee the delivery of high-quality patient services.
    • Manage patient feedback and complaints in line with practice policy.
    • Ensure timely investigation and resolution, identifying learning and improvements.
    • Promote excellent patient experience and engagement.
  • Information Governance & IT
    • Ensure compliance with data protection and information governance standards.
    • Oversee IT systems, data security, and digital transformation initiatives.
    • Maintain accurate reporting and performance data.

Experience

Previous experience working in a primary care or general practice setting is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent, including English and Maths).
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Management experience (qualification or equivalent practical experience).
  • Degree or equivalent qualification (e.g. Business Management, Healthcare Management).
  • Recognised management qualification (e.g. ILM, NVQ Level 4/5 in Leadership & Management).
  • Qualification or training in healthcare/primary care management.
  • Knowledge or training related to CQC, HR, or financial management.
