Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Ocean Freight Forwarder to join our dynamic logistics team. This role will be responsible for managing all aspects of ocean freight shipments, from initial booking to final delivery. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ocean freight forwarding, an in-depth understanding of international shipping regulations, and the ability to manage relationships with carriers, clients, and other stakeholders. Experience of CargoWise is essential for this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Ocean Freight Management: Coordinate and manage the shipment of goods via ocean freight, including full container loads (FCL), less than container loads (LCL), and breakbulk shipments. Ensure timely and cost-effective transport from origin to destination.
- Booking and Documentation: Handle booking with ocean carriers, ensuring that all necessary shipping documents (e.g., Bills of Lading, Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, etc.) are accurately prepared and processed in compliance with international regulations.
- Carrier Negotiations and Rates Management: Negotiate freight rates and service levels with ocean carriers and shipping lines. Monitor and analyse carrier performance to ensure competitive pricing and efficient service.
- Customs Compliance: Ensure compliance with customs regulations and facilitate customs clearance procedures as required. Coordinate with customs brokers to ensure the smooth release of cargo upon arrival.
- Customer Service & Communication: Maintain effective communication with clients, providing regular updates on shipment status, tracking, and any potential delays. Resolve any customer issues or discrepancies in a timely and professional manner.
- Freight Cost Management: Monitor and manage freight costs, ensuring that shipments are completed within budget. Identify and implement cost-saving strategies without compromising service quality.
- Problem Solving & Issue Resolution: Proactively address any operational or logistical issues related to ocean freight, including delays, damages, and claims. Work with carriers and clients to resolve issues and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all shipments, including tracking information, invoices, and correspondence. Ensure compliance with company policies and industry standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in ocean freight, international regulations, and best practices. Identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve service quality.
Qualifications & Skills
- Familiarity with CargoWise freight forwarding software, shipping platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.). Experience with TMS (Transportation Management Systems) and ERP systems is a plus
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in freight forwarding, with a strong focus on ocean freight operations (import and export)
- In-depth understanding of ocean freight logistics, shipping terms (Incoterms), international regulations, customs procedures, and trade compliance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, carriers, customs brokers, and other stakeholders
- Strong negotiation abilities to secure competitive rates and favourable terms with carriers and vendors
- High attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in documentation, schedules, and communication
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage and resolve issues in a timely manner
