Your role:
We are looking for an Assistant Chief Sub-Editor to join the team. This position involves subbing and revision. On some days you will be responsible for revising print copy and on others you will sub copy to fix spelling or grammatical errors, rewriting material to make it tight, punchy, to length and in house style. You'll also write brilliant headlines.
Day to day you will:
- Work on the middle bench when required, checking the work of sub-editors and ensuring every tight deadline is met successfully.
- Check facts and review copy to ensure all stories are completely accurate, legally safe, and fully compliant.
- Consult and collaborate with reporters, writers, and desk heads to resolve issues with print copy, keeping chief subs informed of changes.
- Suggest fresh, new angles for stories while maintaining a deep knowledge of current affairs and trends.
- Work across all four print editions of The Sun (London, Scotland, Ireland, and Ulster) as required, maintaining flexibility to work on a rota across a 7-day week.
What we’re looking for from you:
- Subbing experience on either a national or regional daily newspaper
- Creative, flexible and calm under pressure with the ability to turn your hand to News and Features
- A broad knowledge of current affairs and popular culture is essential
- Awareness of legal and regulatory requirements
- Excellent grasp of the English language
- Able to work under pressure to tight and frequent deadlines
- Adaptability – able to adapt style depending on the story
