About us
The Stray Ferret is an independent, digital news service covering Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Masham and Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire. Launched in 2020, we are known for high‑quality local news, public‑interest journalism, and investigative reporting, including weekly coverage of court cases. We are regulated by Impress and funded through subscriptions and advertising, and we serve an engaged audience of 3,000 subscribers and a million page views per month.
Role
We are looking for an experienced journalist to join our small, highly committed team as a Senior Journalist. In this role, you will shape the editorial agenda, cover court cases, conduct investigations and campaigns, and write a variety of stories—including historical pieces—on a flexible schedule. Based in our Harrogate newsroom, you will be a self‑starter who delivers news under tight deadlines while contributing to the team’s success. This position is ideal for a journalist who wants to deepen their experience and work for a publication committed to making a difference.
Responsibilities
- Cover court cases and lead investigative pieces.
- Research and report on local stories, producing well‑crafted articles.
- Write a range of content, including historical and feature pieces.
- Meet tight deadlines and adapt to varied assignments.
- Collaborate with a small, dedicated team and maintain composure under pressure.
Essential qualifications
- NCTJ qualification or equivalent (including shorthand at 100 wpm).
- At least one year’s journalism experience.
- Strong reporting and writing skills with a commitment to accuracy, fairness and balance.
- Comprehensive knowledge of media law.
- Motivated, self‑starter with a passion for local journalism.
- Ability to work with a team and stay calm under pressure.
- Digital technical capability, including appropriate use of AI.
- Understanding of social media.
- Current UK driver’s licence.
Desirable qualifications
- Knowledge of the geographical area we serve.
- Video production skills.
