JOB PURPOSE

The Barista Evangelist will play a key role in both the daily operation and the missional life of The Story Coffee. This role combines excellent hospitality and coffee skills with a genuine heart for people and Christian mission. The post-holder will oversee daily café operations, serve customers with warmth and professionalism, support and train volunteers, and actively participate in the spiritual and community-focused life of the café. This role is ideal for someone who sees hospitality as ministry and a coffee shop as a place for relationship-building, discipleship, and community transformation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide excellent customer service, creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
  • Prepare and serve high-quality coffee and food in line with food hygiene standards.
  • Operate the till, serve tables, and maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation.
  • Ensure equipment is used correctly, cleaned, and well maintained.
  • Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering supplies.

Leadership & Team Support

  • Support and help coordinate volunteers, including training in coffee preparation, food handling, and customer service.
  • Assist in managing the volunteer rota.
  • Work closely with the line manager and board to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Contribute ideas to improve efficiency, menu development, and customer experience.

Mission & Community Engagement

  • Engage naturally and respectfully in conversations about faith when appropriate.
  • Support the café’s evangelistic and community-focused activities.
  • Participate in prayer meetings and the spiritual life of The Story Coffee.
  • Build strong relationships with regular customers and the local community.

General Responsibilities

  • Attend team meetings and contribute positively to team development.
  • Support the overall vision and values of The Story Coffee.
  • Undertake any reasonable duties required to support the café’s mission and operations.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • A committed and active Christian faith, able to demonstrate a personal faith and alignment with the Evangelical Alliance doctrinal basis.
  • A genuine passion for hospitality, people, and evangelism.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience as a barista, with confidence in espresso preparation and latte art (training can be provided).
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A positive, professional, and solution-focused attitude.
  • Willingness to work flexibly according to the needs of the business.
  • Ability to manage stock and basic café administration.
  • Experience in food preparation and food hygiene standards.
  • Previous experience in café or hospitality management.
  • Experience training or leading volunteers or staff.
  • Knowledge of coffee trends and equipment maintenance.
  • Experience in mission, church planting, or evangelism.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with an understanding of sustainability and profitability.
  • A heart for seeing people grow, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

The Story Coffee is committed to the ongoing spiritual and professional development of its staff. Relevant training will be provided, including coffee skills, food hygiene, leadership development, and evangelistic training (if needed), as agreed with the line manager.

  • Appointment subject to satisfactory references.
