The Opportunity

This is a chance to join one of the UKs leading logistics businesses in a role where the SQL estate underpins genuinely mission-critical systems. Youll be joining a team of two DBAs, reporting into a Lead DBA, taking shared ownership of a predominantly on-prem MS SQL environment that supports a 24/7 operation. When performance dips or systems fail, the wider business feels it. So this is about stability, optimisation and doing the fundamentals properly. There is some exposure to cloud in the wider landscape and the hiring manager has said any Azure experience would be a real plus, but the core environment today is on-prem. If youve got a bit of cloud exposure alongside strong on-prem SQL fundamentals, that would land well.

Day to day

Youll be responsible for managing and optimising the MS SQL estate, ensuring performance, integrity and availability across business-critical systems. Key parts of the role will include:

  • managing and maintaining SQL Server databases across production and non-production environments
  • monitoring performance and proactively tuning queries, indexes and configurations
  • owning backups, restores, patching and upgrades, keeping systems secure and up to date
  • supporting high availability, disaster recovery and data retention strategies
  • working closely with development and infrastructure teams to improve resilience and capacity planning
  • supporting incidents and participating in a paid on-call rota

They use industry standard monitoring tools and are focused on maintaining very high uptime across the SQL estate.

Who We Are Looking For

Wed like to speak with you if youve spent solid time administering MS SQL in a live, operational environment. Youll likely have experience maintaining high availability and performance, troubleshooting issues calmly and methodically, and working alongside other IT teams to support critical applications. Exposure to Azure (or other cloud platforms) would be useful, but its not essential. Strong on-prem SQL experience is the priority. Just as important is your approach. This team needs someone organised, self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership within a small DBA function.

The Next Steps

If this sounds like something youd be open to exploring, or youd just like to understand the structure and roadmap in more detail, youve got a few options:

  • Call Joe White at CRG TEC for a straightforward conversation about the role, the team and the challenges.
  • Drop Joe a message on LinkedIn and hell come back to you.
  • Or, if youre happy with what youve read, send your CV across and Joe will give you a call to talk it through properly.
