Sporting News is seeking part-time freelance contributing writers to join its trending Wires Network in the U.K. These are high-volume writing positions on a performance model best suited for candidates looking for supplemental work or aspiring journalists looking to gain experience.
Writing for a U.K. sports audience on SN’s U.K. edition, contributors will cover the biggest stories of the day across a number of sports. From football and snooker to rugby and tennis, our Wires team is dialed into trending news and viral moments, and comfortable writing with authority against a wide range of topics.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of driving traffic and experience utilising best SEO practices to surface content on Google Discover.
SN’s Wires Network creates feed-friendly informative content tailored for the casual fan.
- Can you sell stories with captivating headlines?
- Can you identify unique, differentiating angles to major stories?
- Can you source ideas from press conferences, podcasts or social feeds?
- Can you write quickly, selling a story with concise yet complete copy (300-400 words)?
If that sounds like you, we want to talk!
A word to the wise: We aren’t looking for beat writer match reports. We aren’t looking for long-form features or investigative reporting. We aren’t looking for hot takes or commentary. While there’s certainly a home for that type of content, it doesn’t mesh with this specific opportunity.
We’re looking for candidates who can commit to writing at least 20 articles per week (typically 300-400 words) for at least the next three months. The pay is performance-based tied to traffic.
THE PROJECT:
- Curate and write 20+ stories per week
- Occasionally assist with live coverage as needed in coordination with Senior Editors
- Proactively identify and source stories to write in adherence to SN’s Wires policies
- Help support SN’s overall news coverage in the U.K.
- Write and publish stories directly in SN’s CMS
- Apply SN’s Google Discover and SEO best practices
- Execute link strategy with specific call-to-action copy and placement
