Salary: £7,560 per annum / PAYE / 12 hours per week / 42 weeks per year
Hours: Ideally Monday–Wednesday, but we’re open to an alternative structure for the right candidate (within our programme delivery times).
About The Song School: The Song School is a nonprofit - building community through music making in Southend-on-Sea. We offer music programmes for children and young people regardless of their circumstances, including weekly sessions in instruments, vocals, songwriting, production, and performance. Our mission is to ensure every young person can access quality music education experiences through our Song School Fund and community partnerships.
The Role: We’re recruiting a brilliant part-time Music Coach to lead the development of our approach to drums at The Song School. This role is primarily group-focused, working with children and young people aged 5 through to teens. You’ll help shape a clear, inclusive and exciting pathway for drummers - and bring a wider creative edge through songwriting and/or production experience. This role includes taking on coaching for some existing 1:1 drum students as part of the next stage of our drums programme. There is also opportunity to take on additional hours as the programme grows.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing and evolving The Song School’s approach to drums (group structure, progression, resources, and session plans)
- Planning and delivering high-quality group drum sessions for children and young people
- Delivering some 1:1 drum coaching, alongside group delivery
- Bringing a creative, song-led approach into sessions, supporting young people to write, arrange and/or produce music where relevant
- Contributing to wider programme delivery where appropriate (as a multi-instrumentalist)
- Working in line with safeguarding, health & safety, and inclusive practice expectations
- Collaborating with the coaching team to support performances, showcases, and creative projects when required
Essential Qualifications:
- Drums is essential (you must be able to lead group drum sessions)
- Multi-instrumentalist
- Experience of writing and/or producing songs
- Qualified in Music to degree level or vocational equivalent
- Confident working with children and young people aged 5–teens
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-first approach
- Willingness to undertake an Enhanced DBS check (or already hold one)
Nice to have:
- Experience working with neurodivergent learners
- Experience delivering group music coaching (and keeping sessions inclusive, structured, and fun)
