The Somme Nursing home is a charity providing treatment and quality care for service and ex-service persons since 1914. It is registered as a general category nursing home with the Regulation & Quality Improvement Authority. A home that is light and spacious with 50 ground floor single en-suite beds, conveniently located on the Circular Road, a semi-rural setting off the Holywood Road, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity.
Your role within the Home will be to play a critical role in leading a care team to deliver outstanding individualised care to ensure the well-being of residents. You will liaise with the residents' families, friends, GP, community nurses, specialists and pharmacists while maintaining the 6 broad values of privacy, dignity, independence, choice, rights and fulfilment. You will be responsible for administering prescribed medicines in accordance with company procedures and NMC guidelines, assessing all aspects of each resident's care needs, maintaining accurate records and ensuring that each resident has an individualised Care Plan. You will be working within a team of highly trained nurses while also receiving great support from the Management team.
Key result areas/Main Responsibilities:
- Create a safe, secure and loving environment for the resident and his/her family.
- Provide and maintain the standard of resident care required by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
- Provide a relaxed and informal situation so that the residents and their families feel there is adequate time to discuss their problems.
- Implement nursing policies in the Home in consultation with Senior Nurse/Deputy Manager/Nurse Manager.
- Provide the necessary leadership so that high standards of care are maintained.
- Act up as required for nurse in charge.
- Participate in the clinical supervision of nursing care.
- Assess the residents' individual, spiritual, emotional and physical needs.
- Prepare and receive Home reports.
- Assist Senior Nurse/Deputy Manager in maintaining good order, environmental hygiene and appearance of nursing and ancillary staff within the Home.
- Document specific nursing care as Primary Nurse.
- Liaise and co-operate with medical staff ensuring that treatments and medicines ordered are administered.
- Communicate and co-operate with physiotherapist, cook and medical team where necessary.
- Be familiar with procedures for dealing with major and minor emergencies and document accurately all statements.
- Be aware of the implications of the Health & Safety at Work Act.
- Ensure the safe custody and correct usage of all controlled drugs.
- In the absence of Senior Nurse/Deputy Manager, ensure that all matters relating to complaints, accidents, incidents and industrial relations are promptly and sympathetically dealt with and reported to Nurse Manager.
- Ensure with Senior Nurse/Deputy Manager that all equipment is kept in working order, reporting any faults and ordering replacements whenever necessary.
- Maintain correct economic stock levels of nursing supplies and other Home supplies to provide for the needs of residents' care.
- Practice economy in use of supplies.
- Participate in the induction of new staff.
Qualifications:
- RN Qualified & NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council) Registered.
- 1 year post qualification experience.

- Patient education specific to correct and safe use of walking aids, transfers and mobilisation specific to therapy instruction.
- Monitor and report changes in a resident's condition to the relevant health care professional.
- Promote and instruct residents with nutritional and fluid intake and record in their care plan.
- Use all opportunities to advocate Health Promotion and participate in resident education.
- Provide a caring service and treat those with whom they come into contact in a courteous and respectful manner.
