Job Overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor in Breast Surgery to join a team of accomplished Surgeons to support the delivery of high‑quality care to our Breast Surgery patients. This is a full‑time 10PA post. The department offers extensive opportunities to support consultants in both a clinic environment and in theatres, with access to complex procedures.

The post‑holder will be based at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford with responsibilities across both sites. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the 1:6 non‑resident General Surgery on‑call rota alongside a team of Specialty Doctors in Breast and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. Contribution to an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota is core to this role.

Main Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the care of in‑patients and out‑patients clinics, along with theatre assistance and independent operating lists.
  • Providing the 1 in 6 non‑resident General Surgery on‑call at the Princess Royal Hospital.
  • Developing enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
  • Working well with a multi‑professional team, demonstrating excellent team‑working skills.
  • Delivering clinical and quality targets agreed nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
  • Following patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for about half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. The Trust’s catchment stretches from the Cambrian Mountains in the west to Newport and the fringes of the Black Country in the east, covering main towns such as Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Newport, Telford, Wellington, Newtown and Welshpool. Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury, which are 20 minutes apart.

Job Plan and Working Hours

A formal job plan will be agreed within 3 months of starting, based on a 10 PA working week. The job plan covers clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. For a full‑time contract it will be divided as follows:

  • 9 Programme Activities (PAs) of direct clinical care (including 1.3 PAs on call).
  • 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) – CPD, audit, teaching and research.
  • Out‑of‑hours activity – 1.3 PA Category A, 1:6 non‑resident on‑call, attracting 4% enhancement.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed annually and may be adjusted as service demands change. Applicants who cannot work full time can be considered for part‑time posts with suitable adjustment.
