About the Service
We support students with Learning disabilities, Mental Health, Physical Disabilities as well as individuals with Autism. We offer support to students, to enable them to fully participate in their chosen courses as well as achieve their individual goals.
We assist students in their learning process to achieve their full learning potential, by providing a person centred and tailored made support service, to suit the individual support needs of each student.
Student Support Service is accredited by The National Autistic Society. The team work closely with The National Autistic Society to meet the set standards and have regular reviews to ensure we continue to work to a high standard in how we meet the support needs of students.
We currently support students within the Dundee and Angus college/university areas as well as Perth college/UHI.
About the Role
Working closely as a team, Student Support Services can provide person-centred support with:
- Travel to and from college or university, including support to travel safely between campuses where required. This may include building confidence, developing safe travel routines, promoting independence and working towards independent travel where this is appropriate for the student.
- Getting around campus, finding classrooms and arriving at classes on time, including support to understand timetables, routines and changes to the student’s day.
- Support within learning environments, including writing things down in class, taking backup notes, relaying instructions from tutors or lecturers, explaining information in a way the student can understand, and supporting participation in class tasks and group work.
- Organisation and study support, including planning workload and study time, checking emails and college apps, keeping track of tasks, ensuring deadlines are understood and met, and supporting students to stay motivated through praise, encouragement and reassurance.
- Liaising with tutors, lecturers, student advisers and other relevant professionals where appropriate, helping students communicate their needs and understand information linked to their course or support plan.
- Communication support, including assisting with conversations, helping students use their chosen tools or aids such as Makaton, show-me boards and pictorial prompts, and ensuring information is shared in a way that is meaningful to the individual student.
- Emotional and social support, including listening, offering advice where needed, supporting positive friendships, helping students build and maintain relationships, and providing encouragement during challenging times.
- Support during breaks and lunchtimes, including helping students access food, pay for snacks or meals, read menus, make choices and feel safe and included during unstructured times of the day.
- Personal care support where this is part of the student’s agreed support plan, delivered respectfully, safely and in a way that protects dignity, wellbeing and choice.
