Associate Director – Innovation

Based: Edinburgh or Glasgow

The Scottish National Investment Bank is seeking an Associate Director who will play a crucial role in driving forward innovation-led investments that support sustainable and equitable growth. As part of the Investment Origination Team, you will identify, structure, and close successful investment transactions, with a particular focus on innovative technologies, products, services, and business models. The role is ideally suited to a dynamic individual with experience in complex investment environments who thrives in a collaborative, solutions-driven team.

About You

  • Demonstrable experience in investing/financing innovation-relevant companies or projects, or relevant experience in the wider investment or commercial industry field.
  • Degree qualified in Business, Finance, or a related discipline would be beneficial.
  • Professional qualifications (e.g. CA, CFA, ACT) and institutional investment experience in private equity, venture capital, or investment banking, particularly in innovation-focused areas, are highly regarded.
  • Practical experience managing transactions from origination through to close, in a transactional/M&A context.
  • Experience in impact and sustainable investment techniques is welcome.
  • Knowledge of Scotland’s innovation ecosystem and market dynamics is desirable.
  • Enjoy working flexibly to transaction-driven deadlines in a collaborative, high-performing team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading or supporting deals from origination through to structuring and close across a wide variety of innovation-focused investments.
  • Collaborating with Investment Risk, Investment Legal, and Impact Assessment colleagues to deliver sound, mission-aligned investments.
  • Managing due diligence, financial modelling, and risk analysis; contributing to the structuring of loans, equity investments, or hybrid instruments.
  • Drafting and reviewing investment papers and supporting more junior colleagues’ development.
  • Ensuring appropriate legal documentation is successfully negotiated and concluded in line with governance and policy standards.
  • Fostering sustainable relationships within the innovation investment ecosystem in Scotland, including banks, advisers, co-investors, and entrepreneurs.
  • Supporting strategic engagements with government and industry stakeholders to advance the Bank’s innovation mission.
