The Scottish Public Pension Agency (SPPA) is an Agency of the Scottish Government. Our principal role is to administer the pensions for employees in the National Health Service, Teachers,’ Police and Fire-fighters’ pension schemes in Scotland. The Agency administers these public service pension schemes on behalf of Scottish Ministers with an annual pension spend to over 200,000 pensioners of more than £2.5 billion.

As Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design, delivery, and security of SPPA’s digital infrastructure – ensuring the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of systems that support our members. This includes managing cloud-based services (particularly MS Azure), implementing robust cyber controls, supporting disaster recovery, and driving digital transformation through modern tools and practices. Your work will directly enable the SPPA to deliver secure, efficient, and future-ready pension services on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with SPPA colleagues, suppliers, and managed service providers to ensure the ongoing Confidentiality, Availability, and Integrity of all SPPA infrastructure services and data. This should include ensuring that appropriate technical cyber controls are implemented and tested, technical disaster recovery services are tested on a regular basis, and that all technical documentation is kept up to date and is readily available.
  • Lead the SPPA infrastructure team and play an active role in the SPPA\’s Intelligent Client, Change Management and Digital Pipeline processes.
  • Describe different scripting tools and software that are available and currently in use, in particular a knowledge of Python and MS DevOps platforms would be beneficial.
  • Design and implement infrastructure solutions and services, for example, networking and physical infrastructure, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software, open-source packages and solutions, or virtual and cloud computing.
  • An in-depth knowledge of MS Azure is critical to this role, as is knowledge of the wider Microsoft product suite and Linux. Oracle knowledge is desirable.
  • Effectively consult specialists where required determine the appropriate resolution and assist with its implementation.
  • Review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology define the integration build.
  • Troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities.

  • Proven track record of leading infrastructure projects, ensuring successful delivery.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align technical solutions with business goals.

Working Pattern

Our standard hours are 35 hours per week. We offer a range of flexible and hybrid working options, with two days minimum working on site at SPPA. If you have specific questions about the role you are applying for, please contact us.

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post is part of the Scottish Government Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT) profession, as a member of the profession you will join the professional development system. This post currently attracts a £5,000.00 annual DDAT pay supplement, applicable after a 3-month competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are reviewed regularly and there is one currently underway. Changes will be communicated when the review is concluded.

Security Checks

Successful candidates must complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), before they can be appointed. BPSS is comprised of four main pre-employment checks – Identity, Right to work, Employment History and a Criminal Record check (unspent convictions).
