Location: Birmingham (SCC operates hybrid working, a mix of office and home).

Role purpose: The Financial Accountant plays a crucial role in delivering accurate, timely financial reporting while maintaining a strong financial control environment. This role leads key month-end and year-end activities, manages statutory reporting requirements, and ensures the integrity of the balance sheet through rigorous balance sheet reconciliations and consistent adherence to internal controls. It is well-suited to individuals who enjoy problem-solving, driving process improvements, and working collaboratively with colleagues across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial accounting and reporting: monthly accounting activities – prepare journal entries and maintain accurate financial records; month-end and year-end close – prepare journals, reconcile key accounts, analyze variances, ensure deadlines are met; compliance with FRS 102 and internal accounting policies; year-end support; statutory reporting – prepare statutory financial statements and liaise with external auditors.
  • Balance sheet and controls: take ownership of key balance sheet reconciliations; lead on intercompany reconciliations and group reporting submissions; monitor key accounts and analyze movements to ensure balance sheet integrity.
  • Business support and collaboration: work closely with finance and operational teams to share accounting knowledge, drive process improvements, and provide insight supporting decision-making; support budgeting and forecasting cycles.
  • Process improvement and systems: identify opportunities to streamline processes and drive automation; strengthen financial controls; contribute to ad-hoc tasks and ongoing improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Fully ACA or ACCA qualified.
  • Experience in financial accounting, management and reconciliations of balance sheets, and preparation of statutory accounts.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of financial reporting standards.
  • Ability to design and improve processes.
  • Consistently takes ownership and delivers high-quality outputs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to convey financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Adaptable, proactive and solutions-focused.
  • Initiative in process improvements.
  • Collaborates effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with D365 ERP system.
  • Skills in data tools such as Power BI.
