Join Google DeepMind’s Frontier AI Research team to drive the operational and technical success of our most ambitious efforts to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. As a Technical Program Manager, you will serve as a strategic partner to research leads, translating complex and ambiguous scientific goals into actionable technical roadmaps that push the boundaries of machine learning. You will be instrumental in bridging the gap between foundational breakthroughs and real-world applications, ensuring our research lands successfully in global-scale products.
In this role, you will lead and drive high-impact programs that involve significant technical complexity and cross-functional dependencies. You will apply deep technical acumen to perform due diligence on engineering scope, influence technical decision-making, and accelerate the delivery of research breakthroughs. You will build complex programs, fostering collaboration and bringing clarity to ambiguous research challenges. This multidisciplinary role operates at the frontier of AI, from Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems and large-scale multimodal evaluation frameworks to strategies that define how AI systems safely and effectively interact with society.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Strategy and Execution: Partner with AI Research leads to co-develop long-term strategies, technical goals, and success metrics for initiatives pushing the frontier of generative AI.
- Technical Due Diligence: Evaluate engineering scope, establish milestones, and influence technical direction.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Build and guide effective cross functional partnerships across diverse disciplines, including modeling, infrastructure, and evaluation, to ensure alignment on shared objectives.
- Operational Excellence: Establish robust mechanisms to monitor program performance, anticipate technical risks, and manage complex interdependencies between research workstreams.
- Continuous Innovation: Proactively identify and implement opportunities to enhance research velocity and engineering excellence through optimized tools and methodologies.
- Stakeholder Management: Distill complex technical updates and research progress into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences and executive leadership.
- Resource Optimization: Drive strategic planning for mission-critical resources, including compute management and allocation, to respond to a rapidly changing competitive landscape.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Technical Program Management or a related role within an advanced technical or research environment.
- Proven experience partnering directly with research or engineering leads to deliver on high-impact, technically complex projects.
- Comprehensive technical knowledge and understanding of program management methodologies adapted for research-centric environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD degree in a technical field, particularly related to AI/machine learning.
- Direct experience in AI/ML research or development, with a focus on multimodal models or decentralized information systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to understand complex technical systems and identify opportunities for optimization.
