This is an exciting and challenging opportunity at the largest animal welfare charity in the UK as an Animal Care Assistant. Our Animal Care Assistants are critical to the day‑to‑day operation of our Animal Centres. You will work as part of a team with staff and volunteers to provide care, compassion, enrichment and socialisation for all animals in the centre. You will be responsible for the care and rehabilitation of animals rescued from cruelty, abuse and neglect.

Your day will start with cleaning animal accommodation, feeding and watering, followed by daily exercise. The work is physically demanding but rewarding, as you help ensure animals are comfortable and happy. You will maintain high welfare standards, monitor and report on behaviour, wellbeing and health, administer medication or treatment prescribed by a Vet, and implement behaviour modification programmes under guidance. Once an animal is ready for its forever home, you will help with the adoption process and match the animal with a suitable family.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working with animals either through paid or voluntary work (not including your own pets).
  • Experience working around large dog breeds; you must demonstrate confidence in managing large, unsocialised dogs.
  • Resilience: many animals have been victims of neglect, abuse and cruelty.
  • Emotional resilience: you may be exposed to euthanasia as a transport or present witness; direct euthanasia is not required.
  • Willingness to undertake practical work outdoors in all weather (subject to reasonable adjustments).
  • Excellent communication and team‑working skills – you will collaborate with RSPCA staff, volunteers and members of the public.
  • Able to multitask and work under pressure – animal care can be busy and unpredictable.

We are seeking passionate Animal Care Assistants to join our dedicated team.
