Broadening Horizons Intern - Journal Development - Cambridge in Melbourn

The Royal Society of Chemistry is thrilled to continue leading the Broadening Horizons campaign in the chemical sciences. Now in its fifth year, this initiative empowers chemistry students and graduates from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Our mission is to foster a truly inclusive and diverse chemical sciences workforce.

Since its inception, the Broadening Horizons programme has successfully supported numerous participants in achieving their career goals in chemistry. Our interns have secured positions in leading chemical companies, pursued advanced degrees, and contributed to innovative research projects. This programme provides essential support and access to opportunities, enabling participants to pursue careers in chemistry and contribute to a truly inclusive and diverse chemical sciences workforce. The programme's success is a testament to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the chemical sciences.

We are pleased to be recruiting three interns to join the RSC for 10 weeks through the Broadening Horizons program. All our internships are paid positions attracting a salary of 24,071 GBP per annum (pro rata).

The Royal Society of Chemistry publishes 48 world-leading journals that span the core chemical sciences and related fields. Known for rigorous, fair peer review and fast publication times, our journals publish the best science, from original research articles to authoritative reviews. As a not-for-profit publisher, we reinvest surplus funds back into the global scientific community, supporting our purpose to help the chemical science community make the world a better place.

This role is based within the core materials portfolio, working across 5 materials science journals including the RSC's flagship materials journal, Materials Horizons. The role will provide hands-on experience of all the tasks that go into developing and curating the content in our journals. It will involve science writing experience in the form of journal blog writing, as well as creating social media posts. The position will also include working with researchers external to the RSC to organise subject-based article collections.

The role is varied and will use a combination of scientific knowledge, creativity, organisation, and teamwork. Successful applicants will work as part of an experienced editorial team covering the full editorial process from commissioning through to final publication. Those who are interested in future careers in science publishing, science communication or academic research will find this experience valuable.

This role is open to post-graduate applicants only.

At the RSC we embrace flexibility and offer hybrid working, which means our teams come together when they need to collaborate. Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge or London office, you will be able to work from home within the UK, with the expectation that you will attend the office as needed for your role.
