Royal School for the Blind is seeking a 1:1 Teaching Assistant for a 12-month maternity cover position. The contract type is 37 hours per week as a 1:1 TA plus 8 hours per week as an Escort, totalling 45 hours per week.

Salary: £24,413 pro rata + SEN.

You should be qualified to at least NVQ level 2 in a relevant field. You will have experience of working in a school environment and ideally with children with visual impairment, sensory processing, complex and medical needs. A strong understanding of the curriculum and how to apply this in supporting the class teacher during multi-sensory lessons is required, ideally with an awareness of the EQUALS semi-formal curriculum and the pre-key stage standards.

Working under the direction of the class teacher, you will support a KS3 ambulant pupil on the semi-formal pathway. This will involve supporting their academic learning by accessing the multi-sensory curriculum, as well as developing their personal, social, communicative, and independent living skills. This will take place both in and outside of the school site, including trips.

You will be expected to carry out physical tasks such as supporting with dressing and personal care needs, including assistance during snack and mealtimes. There may be occasions when you would be required to push a wheelchair. Following appropriate training, you will be expected to support with their medical needs, including the use of oxygen, SATS monitor, administering chest physio, medication, and nebuliser daily. It is essential to have an awareness of working with Makaton, and desirable experience of visual impairment and autism spectrum disorder.

Weekly swimming sessions are expected, supporting the pupil in the water. You will receive suitable training to support the individual and their targets/outcomes, which will be identified during the interview process. These might include SALT strategies, sensory processing support, and an emotional regulation toolkit.

As part of this role, you will act as an escort for transport to and from school for the above pupil.
