We are recruiting for a Specialist Oncology Pharmacist (fixed term) to work as part of our NHS Oncology Pharmacy team at The Royal Marsden.

Responsibilities

  • Work as an integral member of the oncology pharmacy team, providing expert pharmacy service to oncology patients, the multidisciplinary team, and supporting the wider pharmacy team.
  • Lead on pharmaceutical issues relating to a specific oncology clinical unit, ensuring adherence to national guidelines and medicines legislation.
  • Provide education and training within the pharmacy department and the wider Trust.
  • Establish a framework for the safe, efficient and cost‑effective use of drug resources within the specific oncology unit by creating procedures, protocols and drug usage information.
  • Provide a pharmacy clinical service to patients receiving systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) on NHS day units, inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, and care closer to home; participate in day‑to‑day coordination and delivery of the oncology pharmacy clinical service to NHS patients.
  • Support prescribing at the individual level, contributing to the optimisation of the patient’s drug therapy with due consideration to risk/benefit issues.
  • Clinically screen SACT prescriptions to a standard defined in the BOPA Standards for SACT Prescription verification.
  • Communicate effectively with all healthcare professionals to ensure the safe, clinically effective and cost‑efficient use of drugs.
  • Ensure appropriate provision of medication information to patients regarding SACT within the day unit, inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Support the specialist pharmacist service provided to a cancer unit and multidisciplinary team, providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care through ward and clinic‑based service, and attend appropriate ward rounds, clinics and meetings.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to critically evaluate and interpret published data on new drugs affecting the specialty and make recommendations about treatment pathways and cost implications.
  • Support the implementation of NHSE commissioning decisions relating to the treatment of a designated specialist unit, ensuring safe SACT prescribing by producing proforma prescriptions and updating local/national treatment protocols and guidelines.
  • Disseminate knowledge gained during study or research, develop projects through presentation at local, national and international meetings and publications.
  • Provide the clinical leadership of the pharmacy provision to NHS patients undergoing systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) at The Royal Marsden.
