This is a 6-month fixed-term post for a consultant in Acute Oncology and the GI service. The post holder will play a pivotal role in managing acutely unwell patients, leading service coordination, and acting as Clinical Lead for the Acute Oncology Service at ESTH, including oversight of national data submission, governance, and service development. They will participate in the RMH out-of-hours oncology on-call rota, supervise and teach doctors in training, contribute to multidisciplinary care, and support clinical research within the GI Unit. The role includes engagement in departmental meetings, audits, risk management, service improvement, and collaboration with oncology services across South-West London and RM Partners. The post holder will also support professional development, training programmes, and research leadership, with opportunities for academic recognition through ICR honorary faculty appointments, while fulfilling GMC revalidation and Continuing Medical Education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead inpatient board rounds, clinical reviews, and the delivery of multidisciplinary team care, ensuring high standards of patient management.
  • As Clinical Lead for the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at ESTH, coordinate patient care integration with surrounding Trusts, oversee service governance, compulsory national data submission (COSD), and contribute to ongoing service development.
  • Work closely with the AOS Lead Nurse and consultant colleagues to maintain continuity of service.
  • Supervise and teach doctors in training, visiting trainees, and other clinical staff; deliver bedside teaching, lectures, appraisals, and contribute to educational programme development.
  • Promote Acute Oncology education through departmental meetings, quality forums, and grand rounds.
  • Engage in clinical and translational research, develop personal research interests, lead or contribute to national and international research projects, and support early-career researchers while providing medical leadership to the clinical research team.
  • Participate in audits, peer review, departmental risk management, and service improvement initiatives; contribute to the development of departmental objectives, efficient resource management, and GMC revalidation and CME compliance.
  • Engage in departmental meetings, governance activities, and collaboration with oncology services across South-West London and RM Partners.

Education, Training and Professional Development

  • Supervise and teach doctors in training, visiting trainees, and other clinical staff.
  • Deliver bedside teaching, lectures, appraisals, and contribute to educational programme development.
  • Promote Acute Oncology education through departmental meetings, quality forums, and grand rounds.
  • Support professional development and training programmes; pursue opportunities for academic recognition where applicable.

Research

  • Engage in clinical and translational research; develop personal research interests; lead or contribute to national and international research projects; support early-career researchers.
  • Provide medical leadership to the clinical research team and participate in research governance and collaboration with GI and oncology services.

Governance, Data and Compliance

  • Oversee governance for the Acute Oncology Service and ensure compliance with national data submission requirements (COSD).
  • Contribute to risk management, audits, and service improvement initiatives; ensure alignment with GMC revalidation and Trust policies.
