It’s preserving exceptional craftsmanship that has shaped centuries of Royal history. It’s applying specialist skill to safeguard remarkable objects. And it’s joining the professional team behind the monarchy. This is what makes working for the Royal Household exceptional. Across the Royal Residences, historic furniture and furnishings are used daily for State occasions, official entertaining, and the running of working palaces. These pieces form part of a world‑renowned collection, and your expertise will ensure they remain both functional and historically authentic.

Working within the furniture and polishing workshops, you’ll carry out conservation and restoration treatments, assess condition, develop treatment proposals and produce exceptional finishes that honour the original craftsmanship. You’ll contribute to conservation strategies across disciplines, maintain high standards of workshop practice, and support the development of interns and apprentices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high‑quality conservation and restoration treatments to historic furniture and furnishings.
  • Assess condition, record findings, and prepare treatment proposals with accurate time and material estimates.
  • Produce polished surfaces and historic finishes to an exceptional professional standard.
  • Maintain thorough documentation, including treatment reports and work records.
  • Ensure workshop equipment, tools, and spaces are safe, well maintained, and compliant with Health and Safety requirements.
  • Support stock control, equipment maintenance and operator check.
  • Provide guidance to interns, apprentices, and visitors to the workshop.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across conservation specialisms to develop treatment strategies.
  • Offer practical advice and training to Palace and Castle Attendants on furniture‑care matters.

Drawing on your experience in furniture conservation and restoration, you’ll confidently deliver complex treatments to the highest professional standard, particularly in the recreation and conservation of historic finishes. You’ll bring exceptional colour matching ability and artistic skill, enabling you to replicate historic surfaces with accuracy and sensitivity. With a meticulous approach and strong understanding of conservation science and best practice, you’ll assess objects effectively and propose innovative, ethical treatment solutions.

Highly organised and adaptable, you’ll manage multiple priorities, respond to changing demands, and meet challenging deadlines within a busy workshop environment. As a creative thinker with a practical, problem‑solving attitude, you’ll also play a part in making and replicating furniture and bespoke items for the Royal Residences. Collaborative and confident in your communication, you’ll work effectively with colleagues, specialists, and operational teams across the Royal Household. Self‑motivated and reliable, you’ll maintain excellent documentation, uphold high standards of workshop practice, and contribute positively to team development.

Working in our new workshop facilities in Windsor Home Park, you will also contribute to delivering exceptional events for the Royal Household, working on site at the Royal Residences to support furniture related event set‑up. Whilst a recognised professional qualification and/or a post‑graduate level in historic furniture conservation or making would be advantageous, it’s your commitment to professional growth and ability to guide others while continuing to develop your own expertise that we’re looking for.
