An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Ward Manager to lead Drapers Ward within the Brain Injury Service at the Royal Hospital for Neuro‑disability (RHN). As Ward Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the clinical, operational and people management of the ward, providing visible leadership, maintaining excellent standards of care, and supporting staff to thrive in a complex and rewarding environment.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide strong, visible clinical and professional leadership to the ward nursing team, acting as a role model at all times.
  • Maintain high standards of patient care in line with the NMC Code, RHN policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the day-to-day operational management of the ward, ensuring safe staffing, appropriate skill mix and effective rota management.
  • Support, develop and manage staff through supervision, performance reviews, coaching and reflective practice.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive and engaged team culture that promotes learning, wellbeing and continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, patients, families and external partners to deliver person‑centred care.
  • Contribute to the assessment and admission process for new patients within the Brain Injury Service.
  • Monitor quality, safety and risk on the ward, leading incident reviews, audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory training, governance standards and hospital policies.
  • Manage ward resources effectively, including workforce planning and budget awareness.
  • Act as a senior nursing representative in meetings and contribute to service development projects.
  • Participate in the on‑call and senior nursing cover rota as required.
Person SpecificationEssential
  • Registered Nurse (NMC Part 1) with a relevant degree or equivalent experience.
  • Significant post‑registration experience, including experience at Band 6/7 or in a Sister/Charge Nurse role.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience supervising, supporting and developing staff.
  • Proven ability to manage clinical standards, risk, incidents and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Sound knowledge of the NMC Code, Mental Capacity Act and healthcare governance requirements.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to manage resources effectively, including staffing, rotas and budget awareness.
  • Commitment to person‑centred care, dignity, inclusion and collaborative working.
Desirable
  • Experience in brain injury, neuro‑rehabilitation or complex care settings.
  • Leadership or management qualification.
  • Experience with audits, service improvement projects and change management.
  • Teaching, mentoring or assessing qualification.
  • Confidence managing complex patients, including tracheostomy care.
  • Familiarity with clinical and workforce systems (e.g. Datix, e‑rostering, audit tools).

Compensation Range

ÂŁ48,060.00 - ÂŁ60,974.00
