Akessa Healthcare requires a Consultant Neurologist to provide cover across our hospital sites. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a hugely reputable organisation and provide the highest standards of care. The appointment will be based at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital in Aylesbury and The New Foscote Hospital in Banbury.
The role would involve outpatient clinics at both sites and inpatient care, predominantly non-acute, post-stroke rehabilitation, at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital. Applications for a minimum of weekly sessions (3-hour sessions) will be considered. The appointee has the option to be appointed as a self-employed consultant under practising privileges or employed by the hospital on a sessional basis.

The successful candidate will be assigned appropriate secretarial support to clinical work and diary management.

The New Foscote Hospital was established in Banbury over 40 years ago and has provided services and treatments to thousands of people from across the region. We have over 70 consultants, all of whom are leaders in their specialist fields and choose to hold their private practices here, working alongside our friendly, highly qualified, and experienced nursing and support teams.
In March 2024, The New Foscote Hospital was ranked amongst the top 10 NHS and private hospitals in the UK for its patient satisfaction scores as published by PHIN. The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital was established in Aylesbury in 1832 and has provided services and treatments to thousands of people from across the region. The ownership of the hospital was transferred to our new management team in January 2023. This site boasts a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility including hydro pool, virtual reality, zero gravity, and exo-skeleton rehabilitation. Extensive rejuvenation of the estate and updating of the clinical facilities has already started. Phase one of the project has now been completed with refurbishment of the outpatient area and reception. Every inpatient and outpatient room has been fully renovated. All outpatient and inpatient rooms are air-conditioned. The latest developments have included the setup of a comprehensive radiology service including CT and MRI, construction of three laminar operating theatres and endoscopy suites.
Our hospital group is managed and run by clinicians. All colleagues are encouraged to feel empowered and to have an active voice on the management of their services. Our organisation has strong IT, operational, clinical governance, and accountancy support. The latest CQC report rated our hospitals' standards as good across all parameters.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- To provide and maintain the highest clinical standards in provision of neurological care and rehabilitation services at a consultant level.
- To provide clinical leadership and responsibility for inpatient care.
- To carry out weekly ward rounds and attend multidisciplinary team meetings.
- To provide weekly outpatient clinics.
- To provide input, when required, for assessment of referrals prior to admission for rehabilitation.
- Advise General Practitioners and other clinicians on neurologically related medical issues.
- Meet patients, caregivers, and relatives whenever necessary.
The Unit contains 12 beds dedicated to patients with complex neurological disability who require intensive multi-disciplinary input. It is staffed by an established, highly skilled team representing all disciplines. The Therapy Department at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital is easily accessible to patients with ample therapy space and up-to-date equipment. Occupational Therapy suites are designed for assessment and practice of independent living skills. The Speech and Language Therapy is provided by a highly specialised speech and language therapist with access to video-fluoroscopy. Clinical Psychology is currently provided by a part-time Clinical Psychologist. A Consultant Dietician provides advice on feeding and nutritional requirements of patients.
The Unit admits patients with a spectrum of chronic and acute neurological disorders such as Stroke, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain injury, Spinal cord injuries, Peripheral neuropathies, Motor Neurone disease, and rare neurological conditions. The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the existing multidisciplinary consultant team. An office base with secretarial and administrative support will be provided. The appointee will join the existing multidisciplinary team to provide specialist care for Complex Neurorehabilitation patients with severe brain injuries in line with the international standards that form the National Best Practice guidelines.
Essential Knowledge / Skills / Qualifications:
- GMC registration, as a specialist.
- Currently hold or has previously held a substantive NHS consultant post.
- Fully registered with major medical insurance companies, BUPA, AXA etc.
- Committed to providing care to our private patients during the day on weekdays.
