Peripatetic Guitar, Drum Kit and Cello Teacher

To teach Guitar, basic cello and Drum Kit at The Royal Ballet School, White Lodge.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

Teaching includes guitar (electric and acoustic) to 3 students, drum kit to 4 students, and cello to 1 student (8 students in total). This reflects the current timetable and is, of course, subject to change. The days for lessons at White Lodge can be flexible each week, in discussion with the Lead Teacher of Music. Teaching hours at White Lodge are between 8:30am and 4:00pm.

CONTRACT TERMS

• Hours: Students receive 27 lessons of 40 minutes over the academic year. This may be subject to change depending on artistic performances and other school commitments.
• Location: White Lodge, Richmond Park
• Rate of Pay: £44 per hour (£29.35 per 40-minute lesson)
• Application Closing Date: 27 March 2026 (Applications will be screened on submission. The School reserves the right to interview and appoint if a suitable candidate is found before the closing date).

MAIN DUTIES

• Teach one-to-one lessons in the relevant discipline(s) at White Lodge, ensuring that 27 lessons of 40 minutes per academic year (per discipline) are delivered.
• Prepare students for ABRSM examinations or similar, as required, including preparation for sight-reading and aural tests.
• Draw up a weekly timetable of lessons, following procedures according to the detailed workings of the Ballet and Academic schedules at White Lodge. A degree of flexibility will be required when scheduling lessons at certain points in the academic year.
• Explore the option of running a small ensemble, depending on the scope of instrumentalists available in any given academic year (this would be remunerated separately).
• Perform at musical events if required by the Lead Teacher of Music (these will be remunerated separately).

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• Solid experience of peripatetic teaching with secondary school students in the relevant discipline.
• Training to at least degree level or equivalent in Guitar, with the ability to teach Drum Kit and basic Cello.
• Flexibility to work around the complexities of the weekly timetables at the Royal Ballet School.
• Competent administrative skills, including managing weekly lesson timetables, maintaining registers, and communicating with staff and parents where necessary.
• The ability and willingness to maintain high standards of discipline.
• The ability to maintain appropriate professional relationships with staff and students.
• A confident and open approach, with excellent interpersonal skills.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• An understanding of the aims and ethos of the School.
• Professional performance experience.
• Advanced training or experience in Drum Kit teaching.
• Ability to teach Cello to approximately Grade 5 standard.
• Willingness to contribute to wider activities and events within the Music Department as required.
