The predicted salary is between 13 - 16 £ per hour.

Responsible to: The mother of the service user is the employer, with the support of her husband (the service user’s step-dad).

Based at: Employer’s own home (currently Great Barr but in the process of purchasing in Tamworth).

Job purpose: To support a young lady with learning disabilities, epilepsy, other health issues and reduced mobility with her day to day care and to access her Day Centre and the wider community. She has a great sense of humour and is verbal, although she needs questions and instructions to be in simple terms. She is very keen on pop music and anything to do with animals.

Main duties:

  • Undertake all necessary tasks relating to the care and wellbeing of the person in their care e.g. preparing breakfast & lunch, giving prepared medications, encouraging brushing teeth, supervising showers, brushing hair etc.
  • Support the person in their care with accessing the community for social interaction during school holidays e.g. trips to the park, swimming, cinema etc.
  • Have a qualification in First Aid.
  • Be trained in seizure management and emergency rescue medication.
  • Monitor seizures, temperature and oxygen levels, and take any appropriate action to care for the person.
  • Encourage in learning independence skills.
  • Encourage in taking part in activities such as reading, colouring, playing games etc. and encourage physical activity.
  • Take the person in their care to Day Centre placement in Sutton Coldfield and collect at the end of the day.
  • Support the family should the service user be admitted to hospital i.e. spend time in hospital to give her mother a break and time away from the ward.
  • Help with taking the service user to routine hospital appointments if necessary.
  • There may be times when the service user needs to use a wheelchair and/or mobility frame.

  • Responsible, reliable and trustworthy – be available at the agreed times and give ample notification of any lateness or absence.
  • To remain calm in emergencies.
  • Confident in working with learning disabled people.
  • Good communication and social skills.
  • To respect that you are working in our home.
  • To respect our family’s right to confidentiality and privacy.
  • To understand that our dignity and independence are important.
  • To appreciate the stresses and strains involved for the disabled person.
  • To be happy having contact with animals as we have cats and the service user likes zoos, farms, stables etc.
  • To be flexible with hours in the event of the service user being unwell and unable to attend day centre or having hospital appointments.
  • To be a car owner to enable transportation of the service user.

Hours: When Day Centre is open (up to 48 weeks per year). Currently, the service user is at home on Mondays, but this may be negotiable, depending on the right applicant and availability at Day Service.

7.30am to 6pm Mondays; 7.30am to 9.30am then 3.30pm to 6pm Tuesday to Friday; 1 x 10.5 hours and 4 x 4.5 hours = 28.5 per week.

Day centre closure weeks (Easter, Christmas, Summer): 7.30 am to 6.00pm (10.5 x 5 = 52.5 per week).

Pay: £13.50/hr. Additionally, £0.45 per mile will be paid while transporting the service user (business insurance cover required).

Holidays: 0.108 hours per hour worked i.e. if 10 hours worked, 1.08 hours’ holiday earned. A minimum of 50% of holidays should be taken to coincide with the employer’s family’s annual leave (usually Christmas and in the summer).

Position: Permanent, subject to 6 months’ probationary period.
