Job Purpose

Come and join the team who support a 29 year old gentleman who lives at home with his family and assistance dog on a casual basis. This is a unique opportunity, you will receive training in Diabetes and Insulin administration and Medication administration, you will assist in his daily activities including play, music and therapies to support his learning and independence. The gentleman enjoys accessing the community, visiting local garden centres, going to the Gym and going out to eat. The gentleman has Down Syndrome, type 1 diabetes, autism, severe visual impairment, challenging behaviour and agoraphobia.

Main duties

  • Personal Care: There are aspects of personal care involved in this role including assistance using the bathroom and washing, prompting and administering medication. Training will be provided.
  • Social Support: You will need to support the gentleman to access the services he already uses and other community-based activities that he enjoys e.g. going to local garden centre. You will be helping the gentleman stay active and support with learning at home and attend medical appointments.
  • Domestic support: Assist with household chores and general homemaking, support with food shopping and preparing meals.
  • Perform any duties that are of a reasonable request.

Person Specification:

  • Driver is essential, employer has his own vehicle.
  • Be a dog lover as you will be helping care for an assistance dog.
  • Be patient and supportive.
  • Be friendly and outgoing.
  • Be honest, reliable, and trustworthy.
  • Be respectful of the employer’s dignity, at all times.
  • Understand the need for privacy and confidentiality.
  • You should have a thorough understanding of personal safety.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • A willingness to undergo any training highlighted by the employer.
