The Representative Church Body (RCB) is the trustee of the Church of Ireland and develops policy to support the effective mission of parishes and dioceses. The Communications Manager will develop policy, coordinate training and oversee/deliver communications for the Church of Ireland. The RCB is seeking to recruit a proactive Communications Manager to advise church leaders and to liaise with media in relation to news items and current affairs. The role will include oversight of the Church of Ireland website and the preparation of news articles and social media content. The role will report directly to the Head of Synod Services and Communications.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide communications and media support to the Archbishop of Armagh
  • Provide communications and media support to senior clergy, church spokespersons and committees
  • Prepare research, briefing papers, articles etc.
  • Assist church bodies with communications planning and advice communications policy
  • Maintain a network of contacts with journalists and media
  • Oversee the development of the Church of Ireland website and social media channels
  • Manage the Website and Information Administrator
  • Attend and report on significant church events
  • Support the management team with internal communications
  • Participate in an on-call rota

Education, experience and competencies

Education & training

  • Essential: Qualification in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or relevant discipline.
  • Desirable: Post graduate qualifications in a relevant and/or complementary discipline.

Experience

  • Essential: At least 5 years experience working in communications or media for a complex organisation.
  • Desirable: Experience of working in a broad role covering the main duties and responsibilities of this position.

Knowledge & skills

  • Essential: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to support senior leaders.
  • A strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in society in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
  • Experience of producing written materials, using social media, audio visual output, photography, and design.
  • Desirable: An understanding of the church-state relations and the governance of the Church of Ireland.

Other

  • Essential: Willing to work flexibly.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Hands-on capability.
  • Able to work and live in Northern Ireland and Ireland with access to a car.

Terms and Conditions of Appointment:

  • Appointment: This is a permanent position.
  • Hours of work: Full time (core 35-hour week).
  • Location: Based in Belfast with travel to the Republic of Ireland as required
  • Remuneration: Dependent on experience/qualifications.
