Overview
The Music Director will serve as a key member of the church’s ministerial team, with responsibility for leading the congregation in worship through music, supporting the spiritual life of the church, and contributing to the pastoral and missional objectives of the ministry. This role goes beyond musical performance, encompassing ministerial duties consistent with the Home Office’s definition of a Minister of Religion.
Responsibilities
- Worship & Spiritual Leadership
- Lead and oversee the music ministry in all worship services, revivals, vigils, and special programmes.
- Select, prepare, and minister songs that align with biblical teaching and the vision of the church.
- Preach, teach, and exhort the congregation occasionally through music-based messages, testimony, and scripture.
- Provide spiritual leadership and mentoring to choir members and other musicians.
- Ministerial Duties
- Assist in conducting regular church services, including prayers, exhortation, and leading sections of worship.
- Participate in evangelistic and outreach activities of the church, using music as a tool for mission.
- Provide pastoral care and counselling for members of the choir and wider congregation, as delegated by church leadership.
- Support the senior pastor and ministerial team in carrying out the vision of the church.
- Training & Development
- Train and develop choir members, musicians, and worship leaders in biblical understanding of worship and spiritual growth.
- Organise workshops, rehearsals, and seminars on music and worship ministry.
- Encourage spiritual discipline, prayer, and study of God’s word among the music team.
- Musical Proficiency
- Play and teach multiple musical instruments (e.g., keyboard, drums, bass guitar, saxophone, etc.) as part of leading worship and training others.
- Arrange and compose gospel music for worship services.
- Ensure musical excellence that enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the church.
- Administration
- Oversee organisation of the music department, including scheduling, planning, and coordination of services.
- Ensure that all songs and worship activities reflect the doctrine and ethos of the church.
- Report directly to the Senior Pastor/Board of Trustees on progress and ministry activities.
Requirements
- Essential
- A committed Christian with a genuine calling to music ministry.
- Demonstrated experience in leading worship and directing music in a church setting.
- Ability to play and teach multiple musical instruments.
- Ability to teach, mentor, and provide pastoral support.
- Strong knowledge of the Bible and ability to apply it within the context of worship and teaching.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with church leadership and other departments.
- Desirable
- Experience in evangelism and community outreach through music.
- Ability to compose or arrange gospel music.
- Knowledge of multiple musical styles relevant to the congregation (e.g., hymns, contemporary worship, African/Caribbean gospel, etc.).
Education & Experience
- Degree in theology or any relevant course (required).
- RCCG Ministerial ordination certificate (essential).
- At least three years of ministry experience in a RCCG is advantageous.
- Proficiency in English (essential).
