We are working on behalf of an established accountancy practice, who are looking to expand their team with the addition of an experienced Accounts Assistant and Payroll Assistant. You will be working as part of a team of 10 reporting into the Director, and working closely daily with the Payroll Manager.
As an Accounts and Payroll Assistant you will be responsible for delivering accurate and timely payroll services for a portfolio of clients. Working within an accountancy practice, the role involves processing weekly and monthly payrolls, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations, and providing day-to-day support to clients and colleagues. Part of your role which will develop further over time, to also include processing tax returns and handling VAT submissions. You will also be responsible for maintaining strong client relationships and providing proactive support across all aspects of bookkeeping and accounting. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a busy practice environment, managing a varied client portfolio and delivering accurate client support. This is a full time office based role working 33.5 hours weekly between Monday–Thursday 8:00am–4:00pm and Friday 8:30am–12:00pm. Although this is a full time office based role, there would be some flexibility when needed to work from home adhoc.
Role and responsibilities:
- Preparation and processing of client payrolls on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis using Pegasus Opera payroll system
- Maintaining accurate payroll records, including starters, leavers, and changes to employee details
- Calculating statutory payments such as SSP, SMP, SPP, and holiday pay
- Producing payslips, payroll reports, and summaries for clients
- Submitting Real Time Information (RTI) returns to HMRC
- Supporting with pension auto-enrolment duties, including employee assessments and pension submissions
- Handling payroll queries from clients and employees in a professional and timely manner
- Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and payroll deadlines
- Assisting with year-end payroll processes, including P60s and P11Ds where applicable
- Processing CIS duties for a portfolio of construction clients, including verifying subcontractors, applying correct deduction rates, submitting monthly returns, and issuing deduction statements in line with HMRC requirements
- Managing a portfolio of sole traders and SME clients
- Processing and submitting VAT returns accurately and on time
- Preparing and finalising year-end accounts to trial balance
- Completing and filing self-assessment tax returns
- Maintaining accurate financial records and reconciling accounts using Sage Cloud-based systems
Skills and experience required:
- Proven demonstrable experience in a similar Payroll or Accounts Assistant role is essential
- Experience working within an accountancy practice essential
- Strong knowledge of VAT, tax returns, and year-end accounts preparation
- Excellent attention to detail and strong numerical skills
- Ability to manage a client portfolio and work to strict deadlines
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience of cloud-based accounting systems (e.g. Sage, Xero, QuickBooks)
