We are currently recruiting for a Yard Supervisor to join a busy non-hazardous waste and plastic recycling operation. This role is ideal for an experienced yard professional or senior operative ready to take the next step into supervision within a fast-paced recycling environment.
Job Purpose
To oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant day-to-day operation of the yard, supervising a small team while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, stock control, and operational performance.
Hours
- Monday to Friday 08:00 - 17:00
- 1 hour unpaid break
Pay Rate £14.50 - £15.00 per hour
Key Responsibilities
- Team Supervision
- Lead and supervise a team of 4–6 yard operatives
- Allocate daily workloads and monitor productivity
- Provide training, guidance, and ongoing support
- Promote strong teamwork and a positive safety culture
- Quality Control
- Inspect incoming and outgoing materials to ensure quality standards are met
- Reject or escalate any non-conforming or contaminated loads
- Ensure correct materials segregation and storage
- Maintain standards aligned with customer and accreditation requirements
- Weighbridge & Load Management
- Accurately weigh vehicles using the site weighbridge system
- Record load details and maintain accurate data entry
- Coordinate safe vehicle movements within the yard
- Liaise professionally with drivers and site visitors
- Documentation & Accuracy
- Complete and maintain accurate paperwork and digital records
- Ensure full traceability of materials entering and leaving site
- Support internal audits and inspections
- Report discrepancies promptly
- Stock Management
- Monitor yard stock levels and locations
- Record all stock movements accurately
- Conduct regular stock checks
- Support efficient processing and dispatch operations
- Identify slow-moving or excess stock and escalate where required
- Baling & Operational Efficiency
- Oversee baling operations to ensure efficiency and quality
- Monitor bale weight, consistency, and presentation
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to minimise downtime
- Identify opportunities to improve yard productivity and material throughput
- Health, Safety & Housekeeping
- Enforce all health and safety procedures
- Conduct regular safety checks and team briefings
- Ensure appropriate PPE is worn by all staff
- Maintain high housekeeping standards across the yard and baling area
Skills & Experience Required
- Valid FLT Counterbalance Licence (minimum 2 years' experience)
- Experience within waste management, recycling, logistics, or yard-based operations
- Previous supervisory or team leader experience
- Knowledge of quality control processes
- Experience working with or supervising baling operations
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- High attention to detail, particularly with compliance and documentation
