The Audience Insights team are the in-house experts in understanding our target audiences and the cultural context that is influencing them. They partner with colleagues across marketing, editorial, sales and strategy teams to ensure our authors find their way to readers. The team sits within the wider Brand Marketing team and works collaboratively with both the wider business and the Penguin brand to ensure the audience is at the heart of decision-making.
The role
We have a new opportunity to join our growing Brand team as an Audience Insight Manager on a permanent basis.
Reporting into the Head of Audience Insight and working closely with colleagues in the Strategy, marketing and data teams, you’ll play an integral role in leading and evolving the consumer, market and cultural insight offer to the business and how we better integrate consumer data into decision-making across multiple levels You’ll use your exceptional influencing and relationship building skills to understand business challenges from multiple angles and work collaboratively to implement new ways of using data. A strong communicator with a passion for consumer data, you’ll lead our business-wide communications and insight training to champion the voice of the consumer across the business.
Key responsibilities:
- Support the Head of Insight to identify priority areas of focus for strategic, cross-business insight work that will add greatest value to the publishing houses and address the most pressing cultural and consumer challenges for the business.
- Work closely with the Strategy team to feed into their annual reporting and understand and respond to key business questions that come out of this.
- Work closely with the data team to get audience and market data into more business decision-making processes, experimenting and innovating with ways to engage the business with consumer data
- Support the Head of Audience Insight in leading and coaching the insights specialists within the team, with a focus on data analysis and visualisation and cultural insight methods, helping to foster a high-performance environment where talent can be at their best,
- Act as an ambassador for the value of audience insight, championing audience understanding across the business.
- Develop relationships with the Insight and Analyst community across Penguin and proactively seek out opportunities to further ways to integrate consumer data into business processes.
- Lead on integration of AI tools for the Insight team.
- Own the audience insight internal website, managing the plan for updating data and information on our segments, our blog, cultural trends and our case studies.
- Lead on our communications with the wider business – including Trends webinars and newsletter, Audience Insight Forum and Audience Insight dashboards.
What you’ll bring
- Experience of working with third party data, syndicated market data platforms and/or other analytical data (i.e. Nielsen, Kantar, YouGov, Google analytics etc) and ability to use data alongside primary research to develop rounded insight.
- Previous experience of working in a client-side environment.
- Experience of working in trends and cultural insight/semiotics, ideally in-house and knowledge of how to use cultural insight to inspire business action.
- Experience of leading insight projects with multiple stakeholders, managing differing needs and driving excellence in insight delivery.
- Experienced, confident presenter, comfortable presenting data-driven insights to audiences (big and small) who may not be particularly close to the data themselves.
- Ability to listen and take feedback, as well as share constructive feedback with others.
- An influential relationship builder at all levels across an organisation.
- Curiosity to develop and learn, with a desire to experiment and innovate with the way we work as a team.
- Able to work independently and confidently manage projects with minimal support.
- Strong, up-to-date awareness of consumer culture and online trends.
- Ability to synthesize different data sources and use them to tell a compelling story.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Powerpoint and Excel.
Preferred criteria:
- Experience of using market data (perhaps from a food/clothing/media/entertainment/creative background) and leveraging this insight to inform and support strategic decision-making.
- Experience of hosting webinars/presentations to wide audiences with experience of speaking at events.
- Passionate about delivering good internal comms.
- Good knowledge of data, insight and research resources, platforms and agencies in the market and experience of briefing and managing agency relationships.
- Experience with data analysis and visualisation tools such as Power Bi or Tableau.
- Knowledge of SQL, SPSS and/or R would be a plus.

c.£49,000 depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus a generous bonus scheme and benefits.
While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role we expect that you will work from the Embassy Gardens office in London 2 days per week (Tuesday & Thursday) and offer the remaining 3 days to be worked remotely.
